    Baier: Johann Wilhelm B. (der Jüngere), Sohn des gleichnamigen berühmten Theologen, geb. zu Jena 12. Juni 1675, studirte Theologie, Mathematik und Physik auf den Universitäten Jena und Halle; er wurde 1704 Professor der Mathematik und Physik, 1709 der Theologie an der Universität zu Altdorf, woselbst er am 11. Mai 1729 starb. Wir haben von ihm viele Disputationen und Dissertationen theologischen und physikalischen Inhalts. In seiner „Disputatio de Behemoth et Leviathan, Elephante et Balena“ (Altdorf 1708) sucht er zu beweisen, daß unter den zwei großen Thieren des Buches Hiob der Elephant und der Walfisch zu verstehen sind; die Versteinerungen erklärt er für Ueberreste der allgemeinen Sintfluth („Disp. de Fossilibus diluvii universi monumentis"; Altd. 1712). Von physikalischen Dissertationen sind zu nennen: „De frigore hyemali anni 1709"; „De Sapphiro 1706"; „De fulmine, fulgure ac tonitru hiemali 1706"; „De Asterismis 1707"; „De Aeolipila 1708"; „De lacrymis s. guttis vitreis 1708"; „De origine fontium 1709“.
