Biographical Presentation
B. 1862 in Bonn für innere Medizin und Materia medica habilitiert, wurde ebenda als Nachfolger von J. F. H. Albers 1868 außerordentlicher, 1873 ordentlicher Professor der Pharmakologie. 1869 schuf er das Bonner Pharmakologische Institut, in dem er am Ausbau der experimentellen Forschungsmethodik in der Arzneimittellehre mitarbeitete. Das Fach verdankt ihm grundlegende Untersuchungen über das Malariamittel Chinin und über den Alkohol als zentrales Erregungsmittel. Seine „Grundzüge der Arzneimittellehre“ (1866, 141912) haben, in 7 Sprachen übersetzt, dazu beigetragen, die Therapie auf eine wissenschaftliche Grundlage zu stellen. Bleibenden Wert haben auch seine Arbeiten zur Medizingeschichte.
