Biography
Brakel: Dirk Gerritsz. B. oder Theodorus Gerardi à, geb. 1608 von katholischen Eltern zu Enkhuyzen in Nord-Holland. Obgleich er sich eine Zeit lang zu Franeker aufhielt, ließ er sich doch nicht als Student an der dortigen Universität einschreiben. Lange war er unsicher, ob er als Prediger bei den Reformirten auftreten sollte. Später aber meinte er einen höheren Ruf dazu zu vernehmen und trat nun 1638 als Prediger zu Beers auf. 1653 übernahm er die Predigerstelle zu Makkum in Friesland, wo er 1669 gestorben ist. B. war ein frommer Mann und eifriger Hirte seiner Gemeinde. Durch seine Schriften ("Het geestelyke leven“, welches im J. 1648 erschien, „Trappen des geestel. levens“, nach seinem Tode im J. 1670 von seinem Sohn Wilhelm herausgegeben) geht ein tief mystischer Zug, der ihnen für Manche, in unserer Zeit sogar, einen höheren Reiz verleiht.
