  • Biography

    Cothmann: Dr. Johann C., ein Bruder des vorigen, wurde 1588 zu Lemgo geboren. Nachdem er in Gießen und Rostock studirt hatte, wurde er 1620 Rath des Herzogs Johann Albrecht II. von Mecklenburg-Güstrow, und nach dem Tode seines Bruders 1624 dessen, später des Herzogs Gustav Adolf Kanzler. Während der Occupation des Landes durch Wallenstein führte er wiederholt Gesandtschaften an den kaiserlichen Hof zu Wien aus, wo er die Sache der Herzoge so kräftig und geschickt vertrat, daß man ihn Mecklenburgicae Provinciae Tutor et Conservator nannte. Er starb 1661 zu Güstrow. — Unter seinem Namen hat er keine Schriften veröffentlicht, ist jedoch wahrscheinlich der Verfasser der fürstlich mecklenburgischen Apologia v. J. 1630. Gedr. zu Lübeck. (Vertheidigungsschrift der Herzoge Adolf Friedrich und Johann Albrecht an den Kurfürstentag in Regensburg.)
