    Burchard, einem im südlichen Thüringen angesessenen Geschlechte entstammt und Besitzer einer Grafschaft im Gau Grabfeld, wurde als Anhänger der Konradiner und des Erzbischofs Hatto von Mainz nach der Entsetzung Poppo's (892) zum Markgrafen von Thüringen erhoben, das unter seiner Leitung zur|Geltung eines selbständigen Herzogthums emporstieg, aber, nachdem B. im J. 908 gegen die Ungarn gefallen war, als solches wieder erlosch.
