    Entres: Jos. Otto E., Bildhauer, geb. zu Fürth 15. März 1804, gest. 18. Mai 1870 in München, ward, früh nach München gekommen, ein Schüler Konrad Eberhard's, dessen Richtung auf die christliche Kunst er auch theilte. Bemerkenswerth ist er besonders dadurch, daß er in München sich zuerst auf die Holzskulptur warf, und im Gegensatz zu dem bisher herrschenden antikisirenden, Altäre und Grabmonumente in byzantinischem und gothischem Stil anfertigte und mit seinen geschnitzten Figuren und Reliefs verzierte. Er gab so den Anstoß zu jener Holzbildnerkunst, die seither in München eine so große Ausdehnung|und in Knoll ihren begabtesten Vertreter gewonnen. Auch als glücklicher Kunstsammler und Händler hat sich E. eine Bedeutung verschafft.
