  • Biography

    Als Schüler von Mommsen wandte sich B. frühzeitig der Erforschung der Quellen der oströmischen Geschichte zu. Er hat eine Anzahl der wichtigsten von diesen nach eingehenden Handschriftenstudien in musterhafter|und abschließender Weise ediert. Seine daneben hergehenden Arbeiten zur Überlieferungsgeschichte dieser Texte galten den schwierigsten Fragen der byzantinischen Quellenkunde und haben durch ihre mit überlegener Kenntnis des Materials und mit methodischer Strenge geführten Untersuchungen wesentlich zur Entwicklung der modernen byzantinischen Philologie beigetragen. Diese Probleme beschäftigten ihn während der ganzen Laufbahn als Bibliothekar.
