Biographical Presentation
B. war Lehrer der Mathematik und der erste deutsche Schachmeister, der ausländischen Meistern erfolgreich entgegentrat. Er gehörte zu dem damals sehr bekannten „Berliner Siebengestirn“ B., von Bilguer, von Heydebrand und der Lasa, Hanstein, Mayet, Horwitz und Schorn. Dieser Kreis trat besonders durch die Korrespondenzpartien Berlin-Posen (1839–1840), die beide von Berlin in neuem Stile („Berliner Schule") gewonnen wurden, hervor. 1843 gab B. eine Sammlung von 52 Korrespondenzpartien heraus. In seinem Todesjahr gründete er die „Schachzeitung“, ab 1871 „Deutsche Schachzeitung“, die noch erscheint.
