Biography
Beskiba: Joseph B., Mathematiker, geb. 17. März 1792 zu Wien, † 25. Juni 1863 ebenda. Sohn eines Bürgers und Schneidermeisters wurde er in das damals (seit 1802) wieder errichtete städtische Convict aufgenommen, wo er 1813 und 1814 die Stelle eines Repetitors der Mathematik bekleidete. Nach vollendeten rechtswissenschaftlichen und mathematischen Studien erhielt er 1816 provisorisch und 1818 definitiv das Lehramt der Elementarmathematik an der Realschule des polytechnischen Instituts seiner Vaterstadt; 1820 und 1821 trug er nebstdem höhere Mathematik an der dortigen Universität vor. Seit 1847 und bis an sein Ende war er Vicedirector des polytechnischen Instituts. Er schrieb: „Auflösungslehre der Gleichungen", 1819, neue Aufl. 1832; „Lehrbuch der Elementarmathematik", 3 Thle. (Arithmetik, Algebra, Geometrie) 1822 bis 1826, neue Aufl. 1839, 1846; „Lehrbuch für die juristische, politische und kameralistische Arithmetik“, 1842; „Lehrbuch der Algebra“, 1851.
