  • Biography

    B., über dessen Ausbildungsgang nichts bekannt ist, gehörte wohl seit dem 18. Lebensjahre der Wiener Hofkapelle an, zuerst als|Instrumentalist, seit 1649 als Hofkapellmeister. Die Tätigkeit in diesem Kreise, wo selbst die Kaiser komponierten (Ferdinand III., Leopold I.) und neben B. andere bedeutende Musiker wirkten (F. Sances, G. G. Arrigoni, M. A. Cesti u. a.), gab reichen Ansporn zum Schaffen auf dem Gebiet der Oper, des Oratoriums wie der Kirchen- und Instrumentalmusik. Kompositionsaufträge zu repräsentativsten Anlässen lassen die hohe Wertschätzung des Meisters erkennen; seine Kirchenwerke sind sogar in führende protestantische Kantoreien (Leipzig) eingedrungen. Sein Schaffen im Neuland von Oper und Oratorium steht unter venezianischen Stilvorzeichen. Die feste Verankerung der Oper am Wiener Hof ist mit sein Verdienst.
