Biography
Arnulf von Gent (vielleicht so genannt, weil er daselbst Burggraf war), Graf von Holland, Ende des 10. Jahrhunderts. Sein Regierungsantrit wird auf 988 gesetzt, sein Tod auf den 18. Sept. oder 1. Oct. 993, wo er von den Friesen getödtet ward (Voigtel-Cohn, Stammtafeln 217). Daß er die holländische Grafschaft wirklich geführt hat, wird von Andern bezweifelt (vgl. Biogr. nat. de Belg.). Seine Gemahlin Luitgard war eine Verwandte der Kaiserin Theophano. Deren Einfluß ist es zuzuschreiben, daß die Abtei von Egmond in Rordholland¶, ungefähr 60 Jahre zuvor gestiftet, eine an griechischen und lateinischen Schriftstellern reiche Bibliothek erwarb, der sie einen Theil ihres spätern Ruhmes verdankte.
