Biography

Gonzaga: Hannibal, Fürst von G., Marchese di Mantua, österreichischer Feldmarschall. Aus der Linie Sabioneta und Bozzolo stammend, wurde G. 1602 geboren. Er nahm kaiserliche Dienste, in welchen er theils durch seine Tapferkeit im dreißigjährigen Kriege, wo er schon 1634 als Oberst ein Regiment befehligte, theils durch seine Abkunft schnell von Stufe zu Stufe emporstieg und frühzeitig General ward. 1640 zum Commandanten der Stadt Wien ernannt, erhielt er drei Jahre später den Posten eines Obersten der Stadt-Guardia, im folgenden den wichtigen eines General-Feld-, Land- und Hauszeugmeisters. 1660 wurde G. Feldmarschall, 1666 Präsident des Hofkriegsrathes, so wie auch Obersthofmeister der verwittweten Kaiserin Eleonore. Er starb zu Wien den 2. Aug. 1668.
