    Appel: Joseph A., Numismatiker, geb. zu Wien 1767; † daselbst 4. Dec. 1834. Seine reichhaltige Münzsammlung und seine umfassende Münzkenntniß erwarben ihm in Fachkreisen einen großen Ruf. Von seinen numismatischen Werken gilt das allerdings nicht sehr wissenschaftlich gearbeitete „Repertorium der Münzkunde des Mittelalters und der neueren Zeit“ (Wien 1819—1828) noch heute als brauchbares Hülfswerk.
