    Schelhammer: Günther Christoph S., Arzt, geboren am 13. März 1649 in Jena als Sohn des dortigen Professors der Anatomie und Chirurgie Christoph S. (1620—52), studirte an der Universität seiner Vaterstadt, in Leipzig|und Leyden, machte an letztgenanntem Orte die Belagerung durch die Franzosen mit und betheiligte sich bei dieser Gelegenheit tapfer am Vertheidigungskampfe. Darauf machte er im ganzen 5 Jahre lang wissenschaftliche Reisen und zwar nach England, wo er mit Boyle und Morison bekannt wurde, nach Frankreich und Italien, erwarb nach seiner Rückkehr 1677 unter dem Vorsitz von Wedel mit der Abhandlung „De voce ejusque adfectibus“ die Doctorwürde, erhielt schon 1679 die Professur der Botanik in Helmstedt. die er 10 Jahre lang bekleidete, bis er 1689 einem Ruf als Professor der Anatomie. Chirurgie und Botanik nach Jena folgte. 1695 vertauschte er diese Stellung mit der ordentlichen Professur der praktischen Medicin in Kiel, wo er zugleich als Herzoglicher Leibarzt bis an sein am 11. Februar 1716 eingetretenes Lebensende wirkte. S. war nicht bloß ein gelehrter Arzt, sondern auch ein tüchtiger Naturforscher. Er hat botanische, chemische, physikalische und rein medicinische Arbeiten in beträchtlicher Anzahl veröffentlicht. Letztere sind allerdings meist nur von geringem Umfange, Dissertationen und akademische Programme, welche heutzutage nur noch geringfügiges Interesse besitzen und hauptsächlich S. als einen großen Freund der chemiatrischen Lehren des Holländers Sylvius documentiren.
