Biographical Presentation
Ammann: Johannes A., Botaniker, als Sohn des Professors der Physik Johann Jacob geb. zu Schaffhausen 22. Dec. 1707, † zu St. Petersburg 1742 (nach Ruprecht 1741, nach Leu, Schw. Lex. schon 1740). Er studirte und promovirte zu Leyden, wurde 1730 Aufseher des Museums von Hans Sloane in London und 1733 ordentliches Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften und Professor der Kräuterkunde in St. Petersburg; er war auch Mitglied der Londoner Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften. Er hatte außer kleineren Abhandlungen eine sorgfältige kritische Darstellung seltener russischer Pflanzen mit guten Abbildungen „Stirpium rariorum in imperio Rutheno .. icones et descriptiones“, Petrop. 1739. 35 Taf. begonnen, als ihn ein früher Tod überraschte. 1736 soll er den botanischen Garten für die Akademie der Wissenschaften in St. Petersburg angelegt haben; dieselbe erwarb nach seinem Tode seine Bibliothek und sein Herbarium.
