Biographical Presentation
1574 Domizellar in Mainz, 1576 in Würzburg, studierte J. in Mainz, Würzburg, Pont-à-Mousson, Bourges, Toulon, Siena und Rom bis 1587. 1585 Domherr in Mainz, wurde er schon 1590 von EB Wolfgang zur kurfürstl. Kanzlei gezogen (1595 Domscholaster). Am 15.5.1601 wurde er zum Erzbischof gewählt. Er verbesserte die finanzielle Lage des Erzstiftes und bemühte sich energisch um die Gegenreformation, die im Jubiläum von 1602 ihren Höhepunkt hatte. Seinen frühen Tod führten Zeitgenossen auf eine Verzauberung zurück; er hatte in Kurmainz als erster größere Hexenverfolgungen durchgeführt.
