Biographical Presentation
O. besuchte in Plauen und Meißen das Gymnasium. Nach dem Tod des Vaters wanderte er in die USA aus und studierte an der Yale Univ. Sprachwissenschaft und Sanskrit bei →W. D. Whitney, dessen Methode ihn formte. Später inspirierten ihn →J. Wackernagel und →B. Delbrück. 1890 mit einer Arbeit über Horatius Flaccus promoviert, wurde er an der Yale Univ. 1896 zum Professor of Linguistics and Comparative Philology ernannt. Für zwei Jahre beurlaubt, ging O. 1914 nach Deutschland, doch er kehrte nicht mehr in die USA zurück und gab im Februar 1917 seine Professur auf. 1920 wurde er Privatdozent in Basel und 1922 o. Professor in Marburg. 1925-35 lehrte er als o. Professor für arische Philologie an der Univ. München, wo er wegen der Entlassung seines Nachfolgers W. Wüst 1946-48 erneut las.
O. spezialisierte sich auf die vedische, also früheste altindische Prosa, deren Syntax er systematisch analysierte. Im „Journal of the American Oriental Society“ (15-28, 1893-1907) edierte er in Auszügen (mit engl. Übers.) das Jaiminiīya Brāhmaṇa, einen Erläuterungstext zum Sāmaveda („Wissen von den Melodien“). In seinen Arbeiten löste O. viele grammatische und lexikographische Probleme der vedischen Prosa. 1934-43 publizierte er in den Sitzungsberichten der Bayer. Akademie der Wissenschaften zehn Hefte zum Thema der syntaktischen Äquivalenz, der Ausdrucksverstärkung, der Kasusvariationen, der Wortstellungsvarianten, der Euphemismen und der Widersprüche zwischen Genus und Sexus.|
