Biographical Presentation
Tobler: Johannes T., Uebersetzer und asketischer Schriftsteller, einem Züricher Geschlecht angehörig, ist geboren am 10. April 1732 zu St. Margrethen im St. Galler Rheinthale, wo sein Vater Prediger war. Er schlug dieselbe Laufbahn ein, bildete sich seit 1747 in Zürich aus und gehörte 1750 zu den vertrauten Freunden des jungen Klopstock. 1754 wurde er Pfarrer im thurgauischen Ermatingen, 1768 Diakon am Fraumünster in Zürich, 1777 Archidiakon am Großmünster, † am 3. Februar 1808. Er übersetzte zunächst unter Einwirkung Bodmer's Thomson's „Frühling“ (1757), sowie Thomson's Gedichte in 5 Theilen (1765—66). Als Nachahmer Thomson's versuchte er sich in einem kleinen unbedeutenden Prosaidyll, „die Weinlese“ (1765). Er übertrug auch einige Bücher aus der Ilias, Pindarische Oden u. s. w. Hauptsächlich wirkte er als Erbauungsschriftsteller,
