Biography
Der schwäbische Adelige Wilhelm von Mels baute 1302 die Burg C. bei Udine, und danach nannten sich er wie seine Nachkommen von C.. Mit seinen drei Söhnen teilte sich das Geschlecht in die Asquinische (siehe 7, 1693 erloschen), die Bernhardinische (siehe 3, 4) und die Weikhardische Linie (siehe 1, 2, 5, 6, 8). 1591 vereinigten sich die C. mit den schwäbischen Freiherren von Waldsee (Wallsee), auf die sie irrtümlich ihren Ursprang zurückführten. Außer den unten behandelten Mitgliedern des Geschlechts verdienen noch Erwähnung Johann Baptist Graf von C. (1598-1649), österreichischer und venezianischer Feldherr (siehe ADB IV), wie auch der Kardinal und Erzbischof von Olmütz Anton Theodor Graf von C. (1726 bis 1811, siehe Wurzbach).
