Biography
F. studierte in Leipzig Chemie, war dann einige Jahre in der Industrie tätig und habilitierte sich 1878 an der Johns Hopkins Universität in Baltimore. 1879 entdeckte er im Verlauf einer von J. Remsen veranlaßten Untersuchung die Süßigkeit des Saccharins. Er erkannte sofort den technischen Wert dieses Süßstoffes und ließ sich das Verfahren patentieren, ohne mit Remsen die Sache zu besprechen. 1884 gründete er mit seinem Onkel A. List eine kleine Versuchsfabrik in New York und 1886 in Salbke-Westerhüsen/Elbe die Saccharinfabrik „F., List & Co.“, eine Kommanditgesellschaft, die 1902 in eine AG umgewandelt wurde.
