Biography
Durch ihre Mitarbeit im Beruf ihres Mannes erhielt D. eine naturwissenschaftliche Ausbildung, besonders in der Botanik. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Manne und allein führte sie Sammel- und Verkaufsreisen durch Deutschland und andere europäische Länder durch. 1863 schickte sie die Hamburger Handelsfirma I. C. Godeffroy & Sohn als Forschungsreisende nach Australien. Sie sammelte dort in verschiedenen Landesteilen zahlreiche botanische, zoologische und ethnographische Objekte. 1872 unternahm sie zu gleichen Zwecken eine Expedition in die Südsee (Tonga-Inseln). Ihr zu Ehren wurden verschiedene botanische und zoologische Objekte benannt (Wespen: Nortonia Amaliae, Odynerus Dietrichianus; Moos: Endotrichella Dietrichiae; Algen: Amansia Dietrichiana, Sargassum Amaliae). 1867 wurde D. zum Mitglied der Entomologischen Gesellschaft in Stettin ernannt. 1873 kehrte sie nach Deutschland zurück. Sie war bis zu ihrem Tode am Botanischen Museum der Stadt Hamburg als Kustos tätig.
